My Approach
Approach
My approach to therapy is depth and insight oriented. My guiding theoretical perspective is psychoanalytic, which means that I take seriously the ways that unconscious processes, or the parts of ourselves outside of our immediate awareness, shape how we feel, relate to others, and experience our lives.
I think that most people seek out psychotherapy for problems that take some time and deep consideration to fully understand. I follow my clients with curiosity, listening closely and attuning to their experience while helping them reflect on themselves and whatever is troubling them.
Together, we will pursue answers to difficult problems by identifying patterns, making sense of complicated feelings, and exploring how past experiences shape present situations. We will likely notice familiar patterns that repeat in your life or relationships, become more aware of emotions that are difficult to understand or tolerate, and consider the ways, for better or worse, that you have learned to protect yourself from painful experiences.
In our sessions, I ask you to speak as freely as you can. This gives us the opportunity to explore aspects of your experience that may be less familiar to you and to make connections between different aspects of your life. In essence, I view my role as helping you get to know yourself more deeply and, above all, helping you live a freer, more satisfying life.
